than to calf birth weight alone. Percent calving difficulty is the percentage of births requiring assistance from the herdsman. Calving scores of3 or higher were classified as difficult births based on a scoring system ranging from I = no assistance to 5 = caesarian birth or abnormal presentation. Due to the substantially higher incidence of calving difficulty in 1978 over 1979 (11.3 percent vs. 6.4 percent), means are presented separately for the two years. The cows being a year older in 1979 likely accounted for the decrease in percentage of difficult births from the previous year. The means for the 2 years are averaged for comparison purposes. Calving difficulty averaged 8.9 percent across all crossbred cow groups. Simmental cross and Hereford-Angus cows required the most calving assistance (13.5 percent) followed by Angus-Hereford, Brown Swiss cross and Jersey-Hereford cows (6.7 percent). Only 3.7 percent of the Jersey-Angus cows required assistance calving.

متن کاملPerformance of crosses among Hereford, Angus and Simmental cattle with different levels of Simmental breeding. II. Effect of calf breed on cow productivity.
Hereford cows were randomly bred to Hereford, Angus, Simmental X Hereford and Simmental sires. Each sire breed group was represented by nine or 10 sires. These matings produced approximately 100 calves in each sire breed group over 4 yr. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of calf breed on characteristics of the cow such as milk production, reproduction, measures of conditio...

Data from Angus, Hereford, and top-cross cows (n = 641) from 2- to 8-yr-old daughters of seven breeds of sires included in Cycle II of the Germplasm Evaluation Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, comprising cow weight (CW, n = 15,698), height (CH, n = 15,676), and condition score (CS, n = 15,667), were used to estimate breed-group differences. Data were recorded in four seasons of ...

The Genetic Basis For Increased Productivity Considerable research by various State Agricultural Experiment Stations and the USDA has clearly demonstrated the potential for increasing beef cattle productivity through crossbreeding. Consequently, the use of crossbreeding for the commercial production of beef is rapidly increasing. Crossbreeding (the mating of animals from different breeds) is si...

Various two-breed cross cow groups were mated to Charolais and Limousin bulls to produce a total of574 three-breed cross calves over a two-year period. Average birth weights were 81.2 Ib and 76.2 Ib for calves produced from Charolais and Limousin sires, respectively. Calving assistance was required for 12.4 percent ofCharolais-sired calves and 4.0 percent of the Limousin-sired calves. Charolais...
